The ultimate sweets trail through the Margaret River region

*Final blog in our four-part foodie series*

Holidays are for letting your hair down and indulging like you wouldn’t necessarily at home. And let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a proper visit to the South West – truly one of the greatest produce regions of the world – without sampling some the fare on offer.

We’ve covered the best food journeys over the past year, so make sure you get stuck into these before your next holiday: The Meat Foodie Trail, The Vegetarian and Vegan Foodie Trail, and The Seafood Foodie Trail. But, today, we’re all about region’s glorious sweet treats.

The foodie trail: the best sweets in the Margaret River region

Maison LASSIAILLE

A touch of French sophistication. This Metricup eatery is a treasure trove of sweetie morsels: the delicate crunch of macarons, brightly coloured tarts, and eclairs perfectly smothered in chocolate. You’ll also be introduced to plenty of treats you’ve never seen before. Maison LASSIAILLE is a sit-down café but you can also get takeaway or delivery, plus stunning cakes for occasions. They’re dog-friendly with space for your furry friend in the outdoor area.

Bistro Breton

Biting into a chocolate crêpe in front of the Eiffel Tower is something many people dream of experiencing. But what if you can’t get to France? We have the next best thing: Bistro Breton. The owners of this cosy Busselton bistro hail from the Brittany region, and sell a variety of sweet (and savoury) crêpes. Think the famed Crêpes Suzette, or crêpe with poached pear and Chantilly cream, or maybe salted caramel butter sauce with caramelised apples. Chef’s kiss!

Claudio Bakehouse

Claudio is also the undisputed king of the bikkie in the South West, with a popular food stall at the Margaret River Farmers’ Market. He and his family have branched out into a café setting with a mouth-watering range of pastries and pinsa romana (Roman-style pizza) – and their much-loved Italian biscuits too, of course. Come to the Abbey (just west of Busselton) eatery with an empty tum or you’ll be kicking yourself for such a grave error in judgement.

Bettenay’s Margaret River

If you think you’ve had great nougat before, you must try the flavours created by Bettenay’s. The hardest part is deciding which one: lavender or lamington, chai latte or cherry coconut, almond or pistachio? We think buying a variety is your best bet. Or better yet, book a picnic by the lake with mini bottles of wine, plus cheese, crackers, strawberries, dried grapes and, of course, nougat.

The Colony Concept

Have you seen the pots of local honey on display throughout the region? Dark and golden, light blonde, marri, jarrah, and everything in between. Honey is a golden elixir loved by pretty much everyone, and readily available in the South West. At The Colony Concept, you can purchase all sorts of honey and curiously-delicious condiments, but there’s also the option to dine at the café (sticky pork belly bites or honey soy chicken wings, anyone?)

Temper Temper Fine Chocolate

There are many excellent chocolate companies in the Margaret River region, which you can read more about here, but today we’ll focus on Cowaramup’s Temper Temper Fine Chocolate and their mindboggling range of innovative flavours. We’ve been known to call them Willy Wonka – and we mean it. There are the old faithfuls like peanut butter milk choccy, but there’s lots of modern and fresh flavours, limited editions gems, plus great gifts and treats for the kids, too.

Simmos Ice Creamery

Like chocolate, there are plenty of fine establishments to cover (read more about the best ice cream in the South West here) but we recommend Simmos for the sheer number of flavours on offer – 60, in fact! Sorbet, vegan, boozy, nutty, chocolatey, fruity; you name it, Simmos has it. Grab a takeaway tub of your favourite to enjoy later on, too.

Winery restaurant desserts

Dining at a top-notch winery is something special to relish when you’re on holiday here. We couldn’t choose just one that stood out above the others, sorry, so we’ve included a few places well-known for consistently great desserts. The menus change seasonally, but check out what’s on offer at Aravina Estate, Voyager Estate, and Leeuwin Estate. These venues prove that desserts should never be an afterthought.
