The top 13 things to do in the Mandurah region

Sandwiched between Perth to the north and the famed South-West, is Mandurah and the Peel region. This relatively small area punches well above its weight with waterfalls, dolphin encounters, golf courses, water sports, and world-class seafood on offer.

Here are 13 of the best activities to enjoy on your next visit:

Interact with dolphins

Cheeky, curious and highly intelligent, dolphins have a lot in common with us. You can spot them frolicking in the water from the comfort of the beach or the marina, or jump aboard a boat tour. Even better, book a tour that allows you to snorkel with wild dolphins in their natural habitat in nearby Rockingham.

Water sports

The region boasts kayaking, jetskiing, swimming, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, boating and fishing. Or, you can tour the canals and nearby Penguin Island – yes, there are real penguins here! These are the world’s smallest penguins and undeniably adorable. Look out for pelicans, dolphins and sea lions too.

World-class golfing

The Cut has been voted one of Western Australia’s best golf courses (rated higher than The Vines, the former home of the PGA’s Heineken Classic) and one golf enthusiasts should not miss. The 18-hole links course is open to the public and has dazzling views of the Indian Ocean.

Superb seafood

Mandurah’s Crab Fest attracts more than 100,000 people each year. The two-day event has mouth-watering fresh seafood, live music, family-friendly entertainment, and demonstrations from celebrity chefs. Or, have a true Western Australian dinner with a big serving of fish and chips and watch the sun set over the water.

Serpentine Falls day trip

Millions of litres of water plummeting over the 15-metre waterfall’s red granite rock face into the cool green waters below…what a picturesque spot for a swim. Dry off with a bush hike nearby before enjoying a picnic under the shady trees. You’ll likely get a visit from friendly local kangaroos, plus you might catch a glimpse of echidnas and wallabies, too.

Mandurah Boardwalk and Dolphin Quay

Mandurah Boardwalk and Dolphin Quay are idyllic spots in the centre of Mandurah. Popular with locals, holiday-makers and day-trippers, there are lots of options to eat, drink, shop, and relax. And if arriving by boat, you can moor it in the marina and jump into the water from the deck.

Art and culture

With a strong art heritage, both Western and Indigenous, art lovers will be in their element in Mandurah. Visit Contemporary Art Spaces for exhibitions, workshops and events, and the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre for a selection of comedy, dance, opera and theatre.

Yalgorup National Park

A beautiful park boasting tuart forests, peppermint woodlands and a collection of long, slender lakes, what makes the area extra-special is the coastal thrombolites. While these rocks seem rather ordinary at first, their history is extraordinary. These are actually living fossils dating back 570 million years.

Peel Zoo

Get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most famous wildlife: kangaroos, koalas, wombats, dingoes – even Tasmanian devils. Peel Zoo is a privately-funded boutique zoo and wildlife sanctuary that encourages sensible and safe interaction between guests and wildlife. It’s a huge hit with the kids.

The Hotham Valley Tourist Railway

There are several ride options available, including a night-time restaurant train. This is a five-course dining experience with a difference. Enjoy a hearty traditional roast dinner and hot apple pie aboard a 1919 vintage dining car or an 1884 club car.

Amaze Miniature Park

If you love beautiful gardens but you also like your tourist attractions a little on the whacky side, visit Amaze Miniature Park. This park has hedge mazes to get lost in, miniature villages to explore and a 12-hole mini golf course to challenge even the finest young putter. It’s all set over four acres of manicured gardens.

Trees Adventure

Trees Adventure in Dwellingup is a great place to spend a fun afternoon climbing and flying through the treetops. It’s perfect for those with an adventurous spirit or anyone who wants to try something different on their holiday.

West Coast Motor Museum

Founded in 1987, the West Coast Motor Museum is home to more than 50 classic and vintage cars. The museum also includes an extensive collection of speedcars from the Claremont Speedway from the 1950s and 60s.
