Sculpture by the Bay in Dunsborough 2020

The South West has a rich and enviable arts scene that offers something for everyone. There’s premier film fest CinefestOZ, Margaret River Region Open Studios – the biggest event of its kind in the country, Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival, and, of course, the incredibly popular Sculpture by the Bay.

Sculpture by the Bay is the first major art event of the year, conveniently held over the Labour Day long weekend (February 29 to March 2). What makes this year extra special is the fact we’ll be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Featuring 50 large outdoor works and 38 small sculptures, this is shaping up to be the largest exhibition in its history. Not bad for an event that started with just 12 displays.

What are the prizes?

There are nine prizes on offer, including the People’s Choice Award, the Happs Winery Emerging Artist Award, the Braeco Darnart Award (works constructed from more than 60 per cent recycled material), and the Environmental Award Sculpture Prize (judged on the strength of its environmental message). Prize money ranges from $500 to $3,000.

What happens to the art?

All the work is up for sale, and last year a phenomenal $60,000 worth of art was sold. The City of Busselton Acquisitive prize will be installed along the Dunsborough Sculpture Walk for the public to enjoy. The Stone Shell Spiral, pictured, can be seen on Geographe Bay Road near the Elmore Road roundabout.

What else is on?

Lots! Although it’s often thought of as a single event, SBTB is actually part of the Dunsborough Arts Festival. The whole weekend is a hive of activity, with fireworks, open air markets and workshops. There’s also Dunsborough X Factor, which attracts talented young performers, and Classics by the Bay and Rhythm by the Bay for music lovers.
