It’s playtime! Where to find the best playgrounds in Margaret River
The shrieks and giggles of kids clowning around on holiday is a welcome sight for parents. We’ve found the very best playgrounds from Busselton to Augusta that are free, modern, well-maintained, and in convenient locations with plenty of parking. What more could you want on a family-friendly holiday?
The best playgrounds in the Margaret River region
The Pirate Ship (Busselton)
The Busselton foreshore redevelopment is pure heaven for kids of all ages. The play area is enormous, and includes a sunken pirate ship to explore. Just a quick stroll to the other side of the jetty is the skate park, which contains one of WA’s largest bowls. All this is within metres of Busselton Jetty, the beaches of Geographe Bay, and just down the road from the town centre packed with restaurants and shops. Plus new brewery The Shelter also overlooks the foreshore.

Old Boat Ramp (Dunsborough)
In leafy suburban Old Dunsborough is this pretty-as-a-picture spot beneath the swaying peppermint trees. There’s lots of rocks to explore, the bay for a quick dip, and even grab a little something from one of the food/coffee trucks that frequent the area. Otherwise you can use the barbecue facilities to cook up a meal.
Djiljit Mia Community Gathering Place (Dunsborough)
There are playgrounds, and then there is Djiljit Mia. Meaning ‘fish home’, this special space is based on the traditions of the Wadandi people of the South West. Behind Yallingup Coffee Roasting in Dunsborough, it’s a meeting place with opportunities for imaginative play amongst the rocks and specially-carved logs, and engaging with the Indigenous stories.

Yallingup Beach (Yallingup)
Overlooking the magnificent surf break at Yallingup is this nature-based play space. There are swings, bridges, a surf shack, and even a pretend wave to ‘surf’ on. This is all just metres from the beach, so you can spend the morning snorkelling and swimming before heading up to the play area for lunch on the grass. Sun, sand, salt, and sea – the perfect Yallingup holiday. Lagoon café is across the carpark for coffee, baby cinos and ice cream!

Rotary Park (Margaret River)
This could be a simple play stop, or an unforgettable day immersed in nature. Bring your picnic basket, a camera to snap photos of the kids running about the forest, plus closed-in shoes in case an idyllic stroll on the family-friendly hiking trail takes your fancy. Rotary Park at the northern end of Margaret River is well signed, with bathroom amenities and water fountains. There’s also a historic steam engine named ‘Kate’ for our train enthusiasts + The Brewhouse is next door.
Riflebutts Reserve (Prevelly)
If you’re looking for play equipment but with plenty of space to kick a football or have a game of chasey, you’ll like this one. The playground isn’t huge but it’s under sails in summer, right next to the beach, with oodles of open grass. There are some cool sculptures on site, including a big brown and white dog as this reserve is a dog-friendly park too.
Flinders Bay Playground (Augusta)
A playground in the most idyllic of settings. Constructed in 2018 in a nautical theme, this site has fantastic views across the vast Flinders Bay. Check out the wooden pirate ship, swings, and slides. It’s right on the beach so you can enjoy a paddle in the shallow water, collect colourful shells from the shore, fish off the jetty or for the confident swimmers there’s a pontoon to jump off!

Our other favourite spots
While we did say free, there are other playtime opportunities we would be remiss not to mention. Amazen in Margaret River and Yallingup Maze are two fantastic spots the young family members will adore. They’re safe and enclosed, with food and coffee facilities on site. And both have indoor activities in case the weather turns.
Many of the breweries in the region also have great playgrounds – and typically dog-friendly too. These include Wild Hop Brewery, Eagle Bay Brewery, Cheeky Monkey, Colonial Brewing Co, Margaret River Brewhouse, and Beerfarm in Metricup (which also has a waterslide for the little ones). Another big hit is Simmo’s Ice Creamery in Dunsborough.
