Destination Weddings: Amazing South-West Locations
So you’re planning one of the most important events in life: your wedding. Congratulations! What an exciting time. Alongside the theme, the date and rough guest numbers, the location is a major factor you’ll need to take into consideration early on.
Western Australia’s South-West is an incredible region to have a destination wedding. It is unique in so many ways and really does offer something for everyone. Now, what kind of wedding do you want?
You Want: A Beach Wedding
One of the most unpolluted places on the planet with white sandy beaches, endless blue skies and the bluest of waters, ‘Down South’ is the spot for your idyllic beach wedding.
- If you want a calm, pretty seaside location, look into Meelup Beach, Bunker Bay, Eagle Bay or Gnarabup Bay.
- Want millennia-old rock formations as your stunning backdrop photos? Denmark’s Elephant Rocks and also Canal Rocks and Sugarloaf Rock in Yallingup are great choices.
- Fancy a jaw-dropping location with hilltop water views? Look at Flinders Peninsula in Albany.
- For epic waves that the South-West is famous for, head to Margaret River and Gracetown, and also Yallingup Beach.
You Want: A Winery or Brewery Wedding
You are spoilt for choice. The South-West region – both Margaret River and the cooler Great Southern – is internationally renowned for wine. The former produces a huge 20 per cent of Australia’s premium wines. What’s even more enticing is that many of these businesses have beautiful, spacious estates.
Wineries you should take a peek at:
- The Secret Garden at Brookland Valley Estate in Wilyabrup. More information.
- Aravina Estate in Yallingup. More information.
- Wise Restaurant and Events in Eagle Bay. More information.
- Southern End Restaurant and Function Centre in Denmark. More information.
You Want: A Rustic Wedding
Farms, meadows, cabins, riverside or barns: your dream rustic wedding in here. A great place for a farm-style wedding is Solitaire Homestead in Naturaliste, with three different spots for your group: The Shed with sit-down space for 120 people, The Homestead for 50 to 100 people, or The Lake for up to 300 people. Another excellent choice is Stonebarn Weddings in Manjimup. There are six options to choose from, including the gazebo, veranda, a large forest clearing, an indoor dining room, the riverside, or by the dam.
You Want: A Cave Wedding
For a wedding ceremony with a difference, you can book Ngilgi Cave in Quindalup (between Dunsborough and Yallingup) or Lake Cave in Forest Grove (a little south-east of Margaret River). Both are enchanting and ‘otherworldly’ inside, but Lake Cave also offers spectacular views outside; stand amongst towering trees, high above the cave ceiling that collapsed long ago.
You Want: A Forest Wedding
These pristine forests make for an unforgettable wedding and/or photo destination. Stand in wonder beneath some of the world’s tallest trees. Good options include:
- Boranup Karri Forest
- Porongurup National Park
- The Valley of the Giants
- Ludlow Tuart Forest
- Warren National Park
You Want: A Far-Out-To-Sea Wedding
Busselton Jetty is a landmark attraction. The longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere at nearly 2km, it offers 360-degree views of Geographe Bay. The train will take you to the end so your wedding party won’t have to walk.
Make sure you call the relevant authorities in case approval is required. For example, you may need a permit to have your wedding in a national park.
