Rediscover picturesque bays

Depending on the time of day you go, there’s a completely different beach experience to be had. There’s morning with its crisp sunshine and calm, almost meditative, atmosphere. Midday brings a hive of activity and family-friendly fun on the warm sand. And afternoon is ideal for romantic walks, picnics, and photo opportunities with sunset shades of red, pink and orange splashed across the sky.

Enjoy a morning fishing

Sling a line into the water and catch some salmon in Geographe Bay while the salmon are still running. Fishing is one of those activities that can be as solitary or as social as you like. Plus, you get to have the freshest of fresh dinners. Start planning your fishing adventure.

Adrenaline-pumping mountain biking fun

Mountain biking is big in the South West, and it makes sense why. From dense forests to sandy coastal paths, rocky outcrops, and unexplored tracks, there’s something new at every turn. Check out Meelup, The Pines, Middle Earth, and Rails to Trails. Even the Dunsborough Foreshore is a great ride.

A wildlife wonderland

While the world was turned upside down the last few months, our wildlife was ticking along as normal. See stingrays at Hamelin Bay, kangaroos along Sheoak Drive Yallingup, native birdlife throughout the region, dolphins playing in the calm waters of Geographe Bay and our giant ocean friends during whale season.

Wander pretty trails

There are many tracks and trails perfect for those who want to dust off the cobwebs, stretch their legs, and fill their lungs with fresh country air.

The famous Cape to Cape is well-travelled for good reason. Challenge yourself to the whole trail length or just a short section. There is also the Meelup Regional Coastal Track, which runs from Dunsborough to Bunker Bay with 13km of calm coastal views to settle your busy thoughts. Remember to stop in at Bunkers Beach House, which is open for takeaways. Check their opening times before you go.

Get out on the water

Surf your way through the region’s iconic  breaks from Yallingup to Margaret River. SUP or Kayak in some of the beautiful bays, when conditions are right – Castle Rock Bay, Meelup, Gnarabup near Prevelly. Hire a canoe and cruise down the Margaret River, you’ll feel a million miles away surrounded by the pristine natural bushland, Bushtucker Tours hire canoes.

Plan a picturesque picnic

Explore magical forests

The beautiful coastline is synonymous with the South West, but the forests just a short hop away are just as enchanting – particularly during winter. Don’t miss out on areas like Boranup, between Margaret River and Augusta, for a walk, hike or a Fat Bike ride with Margaret River Adventure Co. Alternatively, climb like a monkey at the Forest Adventures Zip line course.

Climb a lighthouse and venture underground

Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouses are open to the public again as of Monday 18^th May and you can also explore the ancient limestone caves dotted throughout the region from 21^st May.

Take a scenic beach drive

Start your journey in Dunsborough and take Cape Naturaliste Road to the protected bays of Meelup, Eagle Bay and Bunker Bay with their crystal-clear waters, then drive to Yallingup to witness the sheer power of the world-famous surf. Make sure you grab a coffee from Prontos at Slippery Rocks while you’re there. And just around the corner from Yallingup are amazing vistas of Smiths and Injidup Beach too.

At Gracetown, admire the stunning views up and down the coastline from Northpoint, then head to famous Surfer’s Point near Margaret River. See where the region’s name sake meets the Indian Ocean. Walk the track at the back of Prevelly Beach to tucked away little Gnarabup. The much-loved White Elephant Café here is offering takeaways if you want a bite to eat and then drive east to Margaret River township.
